I’m not coming on the air at eleven o’clock on a Friday night to explain why a post from the President of the United States is racist. I won’t insult your intelligence—or mine—by pretending this needs explanation. Depicting Black people as apes is one of the oldest, ugliest racist tropes in history. Everyone knows that.
What’s shocking isn’t the post itself. It’s the excuses. First, the White House called it a cartoon and told Americans to stop being outraged. Then they blamed a staffer. Then the president claimed he didn’t see the ending. None of that passes the smell test.
This video stayed up for nearly twelve hours. It was posted from the president’s official account. And when it finally came down, there was no apology—only deflection.
Let’s be clear: if a CEO did this, they’d be fired. If you did this, you’d lose your job. If a student did this, they’d be suspended. But somehow, the so-called leader of the free world is asking for a pass.
And the reason there’s no benefit of the doubt is simple—this fits a pattern. From birtherism to “shithole countries” to now, this isn’t an accident. It’s who he’s shown us he is.
Racism isn’t a distraction. It matters. And refusing to call it out only normalizes it.
