The Weeknd hints at possible retirement: ‘Don’t have any more desire’

The Weeknd hints at retirement after ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow’

The Weeknd, who is set to release his sixth new album, Hurry Up Tomorrow, spilled the beans on his plans to retire his stage name.

Born as Abel Tesfaye, the 34-year-old singer, in an interview with Variety, while discussing his forthcoming album, revealed that “slowly, maybe reluctantly, perhaps not completely intentionally — that he might be retiring The Weeknd”.

During the interview, after a couple of references to “closing this chapter,” the Canadian singer was asked which chapter, exactly, he is referring to — the After Hours trilogy or his existence as The Weeknd?

The Blinding Lights hitmaker, after a 30-second pause, responded, “I would say my existence as the Weeknd.”

“It’s a headspace I’ve gotta get into that I just don’t have any more desire for (sic),” he said.

The Sacrifice singer then added, “You have a persona, but then you have the competition of it all. It becomes this rat race: more accolades, more success, more shows, more albums, more awards and more No. 1s. It never ends until you end it.”

This is not the first time that Starboy crooner has hinted at retiring from his stage name.

Back in December 2024, the Gasoline singer hinted that his days as The Weeknd were coming to a close, when billboards read “The End Is Near” started popping up in cities all over the world.
