🚨BREAKING: GM Shutdown Hits Canada — Ottawa Fires Back With a Brutal Counter | Rachel Maddow✨……..
General Motors just made a decision that may haunt it for years. Three days ago, GM abruptly shut down all of its Canadian operations, including the historic Oshawa assembly plant, the St. Catharines powertrain facility, the Markham tech center, and the Woodstock parts depot. Around 11,000 workers lost their jobs overnight, even though many of these plants were still profitable and highly productive.
Instead of begging GM to stay, Canada responded with a bold move. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a $12 billion Canadian Automotive Sovereignty Initiative to rebuild the industry without GM. Automakers like Volkswagen, Toyota, Hyundai, Honda, and BMW are already planning investments in the same facilities GM abandoned. Former GM workers will get priority hiring, retraining, and wage support.
But the real twist is in critical minerals—nickel, lithium, and cobalt essential for electric vehicles. Canada will now give priority access to companies that manufacture locally. Firms that left, like General Motors, could face higher costs and limited supply.
Standing inside the empty Oshawa plant, Carney summed it up in one line:
“They closed a factory. We’re going to build an industry.”
If this strategy works, GM didn’t just close plants—it may have handed Canada the blueprint for a stronger automotive future.
